Meet Amy, the Brooklynite bringing a heritage mattress brand into the 21st century. Through her love of vintage furniture and interior design-influenced branding, Amy found her way to Ostermoor: a company originally founded in NYC in 1853. All of their mattresses are made in their own Massachusetts facility and are completely beautiful (which is why it makes sense they’re the bed of choice for upstate’s chic The Six Bells Inn.) We caught up with Amy to hear how her background in the marketing world melded with her interests to create the comeback of a lifetime.

Tell us about Ostermoor, the heritage bedding and mattress company, and your connection to the brand!

Ostermoor is a heritage mattress and bedding brand founded in NYC in 1853. At a time when folks were sleeping on sacks filled with horsehair and hay, Ostermoor was designing mattresses using materials with uncompromising comfort and technical innovation. One of their earliest and most popular designs was a hand-laid and stitched patented elastic felt mattress. Today, we are still committed to the pursuit of better rest through our quality sleep essentials with every mattress custom-made and made to order in our own manufacturing facility in Massachusetts.

Prior to Ostermoor, I came from the marketing world behind different retail startups and always had a deep personal fascination with vintage furniture and interiors. My co-founder (also my father!) comes from an entire lifetime’s experience in the furniture industry, specifically from the design and manufacturing side of things. When we met the last owners of Ostermoor at a tradeshow, we were enamored by the brand’s rich history and aspiration to offer a truly high quality collection of sleep essentials that delivered on both technical performance and bespoke craftsmanship. So when they were looking to sell the brand, we were excited and honored to carry on that legacy. In 2024 we went through a complete brand and site refresh and multiple rounds of product R&D. This year, we are excited to offer the entire collection to our customers through our own ecommerce site for the first time and let people experience Ostermoor IRL with upcoming pop-ups and hospitality partnerships, such as our collaboration with The Six Bells Inn where we’ve equipped each guest suite with Ostermoor mattresses and bedding.

Some historical images from Ostermoor's past

What’s it like reinvigorating a 1853 founded brand? We love that the new marketing direction is clean and modern while still having a nod back to the past and the brand’s history.

The intention was always to respect Ostermoor’s roots, while providing an experience and service that speaks to the modern customer. In fact, many of Ostermoor’s original offerings—such as sourcing innovative materials, doorstep delivery, and a satisfaction guarantee—were implemented long before these were considered modern amenities. When working through the visual direction of the brand, we took inspiration directly from Ostermoor’s archival collection of newspaper ad clippings and published literature on rest and wellness, including The Witchery of Sleep (a book published by Ostermoor in 1903 that studies the importance and value of rest) and The Test of Time (a book published by Ostermoor in 1904 that served as a product catalogue and collection of customer testimonials). Even though we spend 1/3 of our lives on it, the mattress is a piece of furniture that is often neglected in the bedroom. You buy it once and never see it or think about it again unless you’re changing your sheets. For something as intimate and central to our rest and overall wellness as a mattress, I wanted the visual and tactile experience of Ostermoor to reflect how the things we sleep on are worthy of being the centerpiece of your bedroom and home. The blue and white striped fabric encasing the mattresses honors the archetypal ticking pattern that became emblematic of the original Ostermoor mattresses. Furthermore, each mattress utilizes our method of ultrasonically welding the pocket coils together and stitching together layers of our proprietary latex-infused comfort foam for cooling and comfortable nights of rest.

What’s your favorite part about the New York creative community?

In my experience, the New York creative community is eager to uplift each other and offer their support and expertise where they can. I’ve found the most meaningful connections without even knowing I was looking for it.

Do you have a perfect bedding recipe (mattress, type of sheets etc)?

I have to give a shout out to the mattress I sleep on: The Park. With a medium feel and responsive buoyancy, I like to describe it as the Goldilocks of our mattress collection. It’s enhanced with a layer of zoned lumbar support and tiny pliable microcoils, which gives it just the right amount of support for when I’m on my back, but also has enough cushion for when I’m on my side. My partner is a particularly hot sleeper, and it even keeps him cool through the night. The Down Pillow has also become my emotional support pillow. I cannot go to sleep without it now! I recently got a linen bed skirt that has completely upgraded the look of my bed (i.e. successfully hidden my under-bed storage), and I’m in love with the 100% cotton coverlet I bought back from my trip to India this year that features a floral print that was block printed by hand.

What’s next for Ostermoor?

While we have a core collection of premium mattress and bedding products right now, I’m dreaming about bringing Ostermoor beyond the bedroom. Whether through collaborations or IRL projects, I’m focused on creating experiences that make people feel excited to come back to bed every night.
