Meet Lucie, our very cool friend behind the eponymous East Village bakery, From Lucie, and most recently, her debut cookbook. We initially caught up with Lucie for her “cool friend” interview in 2022 just before the doors to her bakery opened, but we’re back with an updated piece 4 years later…timed with the release of Cake From Lucie! Read on to hear about the process of writing a cookbook, plus her favorite recipe from its pages.

How did your career in all things cake, baking & becoming a bakery-owner begin?

My mum runs a tea room back home in France, so I grew up inspired by her baking. During the pandemic, I lost my job in the art world and began baking to pass the time. It started small, but from that, From Lucie was born.

Tell us about your East Village bakery destination, From Lucie! We’ve loved watching the bakery thrive since its opening in 2023.

My bakery feels like a little slice of the French countryside embedded into the East Village. My team is so fun and talented and make it feel like home for so many people in the neighborhood.

What’s your favorite part about the New York small business community?

I love how authentic everyone is. Everyone is so willing to put themselves out there and also help each other out.

Congratulations on your debut cookbook, Cake From Lucie! We love that you captured your cakes in both your hometown in France, and here in NYC. What was the process like bringing your cakes to the pages of this book?

It was a whirlwind! I worked with my fabulous photographer, Lucia Bell-Epstein, who captured me just as I am at home in France. It feels very true to who I am. It was long days back in NYC shooting the cakes in the studio, but it was a time I’ll never forget.

We know this is like choosing your favorite child...but do you have a favorite recipe in Cake From Lucie?

It’s so hard to pick… but I would say my raspberry yogurt and basil cake.
