Clinton Hill, Brooklyn

Sandwiched between Fort Greene, BedStuy, and the Navy Yard, Clinton Hill embodies much of the best that Brooklyn has to offer. From the many restaurants that line its blocks to the artsy attitude courtesy of Pratt, Clinton Hill is a character all its own. We’ve assembled the best places to eat, drink, shop, and see in south Brooklyn’s best kept secret.

EAT

Place des Fêtes

A few years back the legendary team behind Oxalis and Laurel Bakery opened Brooklyn’s perfect wine bar. Complete with an industrial chic interior and an ever-changing chalkboard of specials, Place de Fêtes is a restaurant that’s low key a wine bar – not the other way around!

The Good Batch Bakery

You might recognize The Good Batch from our collaborative cake, Summer’s End, last year, but if you don’t, welcome to the club. The Good Batch first opened in Clinton Hill over 15 years ago, and we’ve never tired of their endless innovations – from ice cream sandwiches to honey-butter biscuits.

Speedy Romeo

While it might seem hard to believe there was a time where “Neapolitan style pizza” wasn’t common in NYC, but back when that was the case, Speedy Romeo was one of the first. However this Clinton Hill mainstay is a lot more than just pizza. Whether it’s ribs or wings, Speedy’s always has a solid rotation of wood-fired specials that are an absolutely crucial addition to your meal.

Mike’s Coffee Shop

First opened in the 1950’s, Mike’s coffee shop has more or less remained the same since its inception. This spot still serves a classic diner breakfast – fried eggs alongside toast and homefries with bottomless coffee.

Impasto

Opened by the owners behind Fort Greene’s La Rina, Impasto is a Roman-style pizzeria which focuses on flavor. The square slices are indicative of the classic Pizza al Taglio common in Italy but rare in New York. PS for our dairy-free friends: Impasto’s menu has a handful of flavors that are totally cheeseless!

Clementine Bakery

This vegan bakery is so delicious that if you weren’t previously aware of their lack of dairy, you would truly have no idea. Our favorite dish from this Clinton Hill signature is the Vegan pumpkin pie, but no matter what you’re in the mood for, you’ll be able to find something here.

Smør

Last year, East Village legends, Smør, expanded into Brooklyn with their second location. Including a robust Nordic dinner menu, Smør 2.0 features Danish hot dogs, schnitzels, and a handful of more chef-y dishes. Don’t skip a coffee or a glass of natural wine while you’re here.

The Fly

From the owners of Hart’s and Cervo's, The Fly is the group’s most relaxed restaurant. Focused around Rotisserie Chicken and Natural Wine, The Fly is just as vibey as it is delicious. Our recommendation is to go with a few friends, snag a whole chicken, one of the salads, and a bottle of chilled red!

Maya Congee Cafe

First opened in BedStuy, Maya’s second shop on Fulton Avenue features all of the original hits from the Gates Ave location including breakfast congee, the breakfast sandwich, and the chicken ginger soup.

Fan Fan Donuts

Back in the days before TikTok sent lines down every block, one bakery already had a queue: Fan Fan Donuts. The delectable flavors change often, but some of their signatures include Guava & Cheese, Mango Lassi, and Churros & Chocolate.

DRINK

Hartley’s

In New York, Irish bars are a dime a dozen – this means that standing out in any way puts a unique pub above the rest of the pack. Hartley’s stands out by being aggressively normal. If it weren’t for the perfectly poured 20oz pints of Guinness or the Monday night traditional Irish music one may never know that this small spot on Putnam is the most authentically Irish bar in the five boroughs.

Bar Laika

Sprawling, modern, and in Clinton Hill’s exact center, Bar Laika is a perfect standby for a pre or post dinner drink. Bonus points for being within a block of Speedy Romeo, Place de Fêtes, and Locanda Vini e Olii.

Entre Nous

For all the pomp and circumstance awarded to Fort Greene, Clinton Hill’s westerly neighbor, Entre Nous is one related gem that has more cred in the east (compared to its sister restaurant, Fradei’s.) This wine bar has it all – from coffee & La Bicyclette pastries in the AM to chef-y small plates & chilled reds in the PM.

SHOP

Radical Wine

Our go-to stop for cool and hard-to-find wines in Clinton Hill. Located right in the center of the neighborhood near Speedy Romeo, Radical is perfect for picking up a housewarming gift or an interesting bottle for a dinner party.

Su'juk

This boutique does a great job of peppering in cool new homewares and trinkets alongside a well-edited curation of vintage clothes and goodies. Su’juk has a few locations across Brookly, but there is something special about the original Clinton Hill shop which was opened over a decade ago!

Platonic Love Vintage

Frequented by Pratt students, this well-curated vintage clothing shop has an amazing selection. With a veer towards more colorful pieces, we recommend coming here when you're looking for an anchor piece in your wardrobe to help you feel more like you!

SEE/DO

Pratt Sculpture Park

In the center of Pratt’s Clinton Hill campus lies the Sculpture Park. This exciting use of public space brings the art to the outside of the school and features work from artists including Noël Copeland and Grace Knowlton.
